Dating from the 16th century at least, the Crosshouse was used for shelter by ferry passengers waiting cross the Itchen. It now sits ignominiously in a carpark, under the shadow of the Itchen toll bridge.

In the background can be seem the warehouse of Tagart, Morgan & Coles, a steam sawyer and timber merchant based at Cross House Wharf.
