The Westgate was built following the French Raid of 1338 and was one of the main entry points into the old town. Originally defended by 2 portcullises which were removed in 1745. the upper story remained in residential use until early in the 20th century, accessed by the steps to the left. Famously, in 1415, Henry V and his army departed through this gate to board ships moored at West Quay on their way to victory at Agincourt. The sailors and passengers of the Mayflower and the Speedwell also passed through Westgate on their way to America in 1620.
